What does RNS mean?
RNS announcements: the definition
RNS stands for Regulatory News Service, a London Stock Exchange service used to distribute company announcements and other financial communications.
What it means
The service carries many types of announcement, from financial results to routine disclosures. The fact that something arrives through RNS does not tell you whether it is good news, bad news or important to the business. Other regulatory information services also distribute announcements.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
A notice saying results will be published next month gives a date. The results announcement itself contains the financial performance. They are different documents, even when both mention results in the title.
What to check
- Is this a results release, an update or a notice of a future event?
- Which company and reporting period does it concern?
- What does the original announcement actually say?
Check the announcement type and date before interpreting the headline.
